Sauna: maintenance and space hygiene

Sauna: maintenance and space hygiene

Mar 06, 2020Alessandro Ursino

The sauna is an intimate and cosy environment in which people undergo heat therapy sessions to purify their bodies.
This means that inside you relax, sweat, lose biological elements such as skin and hair and accumulate dust.

External cleaning

Let us start with the quickest part: the outside area of the sauna, i.e. mainly the windows.
Cleaning the windows or sauna glass can be done with the products you normally use to clean your home windows. If you have a steam cleaner, even better: it is very effective on smooth surfaces and especially on sauna windows.

Internal cleaning

Let's start with a premise: the sauna temperatures are very high. This allows natural disinfection of the sauna environment. The heat kills most of the germs that could spread in the sauna, so from a hygienic point of view, periodic cleaning is sufficient.

Saunas are made of heat-resistant wood panels, but they still need to be cleaned and maintained regularly.

This usually starts with the removal of hair or skin particles that need to be swept or vacuumed off both the benches and the floor, which can usually be removed for quick cleaning.

Check that no residues, hair or textiles are deposited on the heating elements, or between the peridot stones.
It is also important to change the stones to be placed on the heating element, in order to make the most of the thermal potential of peridotite.

The use of towels to place between our bodies and the wood is now the norm, but have you ever wondered why? The reason is hygienic-practical: our bodies can be covered with ointments, salves or perfumes, which could drip onto the seats with sweat and thus ruin the wood or stain it.

If the wood is not stained, the cabin can be cleaned simply with a sponge or a damp cloth lightly soaked in a very dilute solution of water and soap. It is important not to use chemical cleaning agents, which may emit toxic fumes (e.g. ammonia) when exposed to the heat of the sauna.

Once the wooden surfaces have been cleaned, they should be "rinsed" with a cloth lightly moistened with cold water.

If there are stains you can try to remove them very gently with sandpaper.
Once a year, if conditions require it, you can "regenerate" the wood with a good coat of paraffin oil.

Tip

In order to avoid any doubts or possible problems, we recommend the use of special products such as GREEN LEGNO

Regardless of which product you use for cleaning, we have one suggestion: after you have finished cleaning, let the sauna air thoroughly, even for 24 hours.
Do not use water for cleaning as it will swell the wood.

Finally, we would like to suggest a kit that will come in handy for the maintenance of your sauna.
