Bon Ton and Sauna: Good Manners

Have you ever walked into a health club and wanted to try the sauna?
If the answer is yes, surely you have noticed elements that make this environment unique.
We are not talking about special spaces or strange objects. Let's talk about the rules of behavior.
Today we deal with bon ton in the sauna.

THE SPACES IN THE SAUNA

The sauna is a public place, where we share a small, intimate space with strangers. Therefore, it is crucial to respect other people's space by keeping the right distance from your neighbor, which is about 30 cm.
Avoid taking up the whole bench or lying down. The correct position is sitting, with your legs closed and trying not to rest your back on the upper bench.Do not stare at other people or move around inappropriately.

 THE TONE OF VOICE

The second rule to imprint in the mind is: be quiet!
The main purpose of the sauna is to quiet and relax the mind. Therefore, loud talking is forbidden.
A Finnish proverb advises to behave in the sauna as you would in church, concentrate on your breathing and your heartbeat, getting the maximum benefit from silence.

HYGIENE

Before entering the sauna remove perfumes, odors from the body with a lukewarm shower, so as to prepare the skin and open the pores to receive heat and facilitate relaxation of the body.
Showering is also important once you leave the sauna, so as to remove excess sweat from the skin before plunging into other pools. Post-sauna cooling down with a cold shower allows the blood circulation to react, rebalance the body and restore the regular heart rhythm.
Never, ever, wipe off sweat with your hands; you would risk dripping on your sauna neighbor and it would not be a pleasant experience.

CLOTHING

Both clothing and slippers should remain outside the sauna for hygienic and health reasons. Plastic and synthetic clothing at high temperatures, release toxic fumes, negating all the benefits of a session; in addition, clothing prevents the heat of the sauna from penetrating through the skin

Some saunas are accessible only without clothing, thus wearing only the towel: it serves as a sarong inside the cabin, for the more demure, to cover the intimate parts; it serves inside the sauna to cover the benches from one's sweat, preserving the wood of the benches and making them easily usable for later guests.

Remember to remove metal and technological or mechanical objects so as to avoid in sauna micro burns and ruining your objects.

 FOOD

Avoid, as early as the day before the sauna visit, the consumption of very spicy foods, garlic and onion. In the sauna all odors are expelled by sweating through the skin and may become unpleasant to other guests.

To replenish the body from the loss of fluids and salts, it is recommended to drink herbal teas and water at room temperature, and to avoid losing the healthful and rejuvenating benefit of the sauna, avoid drinks with alcoholic gradation.

THINK ONLY OF YOU

If you want your experience to be one of total relaxation and pleasure, take your time, leave the hectic daily rhythms far behind, listen to your body, breathe and relax!
